At the Forum we are committed to extending the public discourse throughout the student body and making debates as accessible as possible while maintaining an excellent calibre of argument. This event is comprised of two debates which seek to bring together students and societies to debate the subfusc referendum in a manner which encourages participation and lively discussion.
OUSU recently released that they were planning to hold a referendum on the issue of wearing subfusc during exams. To fully explore the matter, we have decided to pit two societies against each other on the issue of subfusc. Once this debate has concluded students will be invited for a drinks reception in Blue Boar Exhibition Centre. This debate will be followed by an audience driven debate. The Forum will run this debate in an untraditional format allowing members of the audience to move and control the direction of the debate. This format mixes the dynamism of short contributions with the potential for rhetoric that a longer speech affords, while providing the potential for amending the motion which will allow the audience to change the motion to better reflect their views. The motion for this debate will be revealed on the night. If you have any suggestions for a motion please email…
Audience members will be polled before and after each motion on how they will vote via a secret ballot. This is so that we can see how people have changed their minds over the course of the evening. While the votes are being counted and during the interval between debates, audience members are invited to a drinks reception to potentially continue the debate over refreshments.
The results from the opening and closing ballot will then be revealed during the last drinks reception of the evening.
More information on this debate is coming soon.
